1.  Maples are one of the most common trees in Poland. We can see them mainly in parks and forests, but hardly ever along the streets. Polish people are very attached to them as they are associated with Slavic tradition where they have always been taken as good and caring trees. On the other hand, this tree has been praised for its decorative values. The colours of the leaves change throughout the year; in spring they bloom in gold while in autumn the leaves change from green, yellow, red, or even purple. In summer, the large leaves provide us with shadow, so much needed in hot weather. As  a water‑loving plant, it can’t be planted near the roads in the city as it doesn’t grow well in dry air. Moreover, it is very sensitive to the soil salinity,

2.  A birch is easily recognized even by little children due to its white bark and fragile‑looking leaves. It isn’t a demanding plant to grow, and it can grow almost anywhere. This multiplicity makes it quite attractive. It is such an amazing tree that it is even said that lightning never strikes it. Birch is believed to have treatment values. First of all, it is recommended to… hug a birch for 3‑5 minutes to release tension. If practised regularly, it is supposed to support our mental health. An herbal infusion has anti‑inflammatory, anti‑fungal, and anti‑cancer qualities. Moreover, it helps get rid of toxins from our bodies and supports the work of our kidneys.

3.  Oaks are trees with a long lifespan. The oldest one in Poland was about 800 years old, but natural forces blew it down in 2016. Acorns, its fruits, make delicacies for many animals such as deer, squirrels, boars and many others that survive winter time due to them. It  is not common knowledge that people used acorns to make flour to bake bread and cakes. Some scientists counted about 1,500 different living organisms (plants and animals) strictly connected with this tree. Among them are birds, fungus, insects, or rodents.

4.  Poplars can grow up to 40 metres, and some can live up to 200 years. Despite the fact that they can live a long time, their branches quickly break causing danger to humans and damage to properties. They steadily grow in the soil as their roots can reach within a radius of 20 metres, especially near wetlands. In the past, people treated them as natural lightning rods since they were frequently struck by lightning during storms.

5.  Did you know that pines have five more times vitamin C than lemons? Three kinds of this tree are under legal protection in Poland. Pines are widely used in many fields: the building sector and the furniture, perfume, or cosmetics industry. Walking in pine forests are recommended by doctors as the resin works as curative inhalations. Pine extracts are highly appreciated by people with respiratory problems.  The oldest registered pine in Poland is 363 years old in Mińsk Mazowiecki!

6.  One of the most common conifers in Europe and Poland is the spruce. It is also the second tallest one! It can even be 60 metres tall. Musicians highly value its wood and resonating features so they use it to make instruments. Apart from that, people use it widely in the carpentry and paper industry. As a decorative plant, it is often planted in gardens and used as a Christmas tree.
