However, the benefits and drawbacks of digital education depend largely on the type of learning one engages in. Indeed, there are a few popular methods of studying in the online space. This type of learning relies on rapid communication between teachers and their students. It allows for real‑time schooling with the use of digital means.

This type of learning focuses on self‑management instead of instantaneous communication with teachers. Students create their own schedules and use emails or e‑learning platforms to turn in their work.

SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE LEARNING

Synchronous online learning relies on instantaneous communication between the teacher and the class. In recent years, this form of online learning has become increasingly popular, with entire schools switching to digital systems to allow both the students and the teachers to work from the comfort of their homes.

The biggest advantage of synchronous online learning is the ability to react and provide feedback in real‑time which mimics the physical classroom environment. Another upside is the ability to form teaching groups that foster a better understanding of the subject. Something ought to be said about inclusivity as well. The synchronous learning method is geared towards all kinds of students who may have very different approaches and abilities when it comes to digital learning.

Understandably, what might be a benefit to some is a drawback to others. Critics of synchronous online learning argue that it imposes restrictions on what is otherwise an extremely flexible model of education. After all, for the communication to be instantaneous, the entire class needs to gather at the same time. It’s not unlike traditional classrooms with the only difference being that you don’t need to leave your house to attend. In that way, synchronous online learning imposes similar restrictions to those found in traditional learning environments.

ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE LEARNING

The opponents of the synchronous mode are usually fans of asynchronous online learning. The store and forward method doesn’t rely on instantaneous communication. Instead, students participate in self‑managed courses, post their messages on designated boards, and chat or email with the teachers and other classmates.

As such, this type of online learning is not only accommodating to both students and teachers but also promotes and fosters self‑management. Those who learn are expected to mind their individual schedules and ensure that all their coursework is admitted on time. It’s an especially effective method of learning for those who value independence and flexible schedules.

However, there are drawbacks to this type of online learning, most notably the sense of isolation and lack of imposed structure. Many students rely on cooperation from others in their class, as well as on teachers, to study effectively. Furthermore, while being able to learn at any time and from any place seems tempting, it also means having less contact with peers which can be extremely problematic when one is not attending any traditional classes.

BLENDED LEARNING

To alleviate the drawbacks of synchronous and asynchronous methods, some schools decide to introduce blended (or: hybrid) learning. As per the name, it's a blend of up close and personal classes, workshops, and exercises as well as online coursework in the form of discussion sheets, quizzes, and tests.

This method of learning appears to have the best outcomes for students since they can rely on interpersonal connections and cooperation with their peers and teachers while also learning how to self‑manage and organise their coursework. There seem to be way more advantages than drawbacks to hybrid learning, however, some of the same issues that plague the asynchronous method are present.

For one, many teachers claim that providing feedback through digital means is more time‑consuming and difficult than when using traditional methods. Furthermore, the students left to their own devices, even if only when it comes to online homework, may fall behind due to poor time management and lack of external control.
