The period of „Sturm und Drang” in painting.

Target group:

2nd‑grade students of a high school.

Students will get acquainted with examples of romantic painting (Polish and European) characteristic of the period of „storm and pressure” in art.

Lesson plan overview

Before classes

  1. Students visit the virtual National Museum in Krakow. They visit the Gallery of 19th‑century Polish Art in the Cloth Hall - they focus on the hall: „Romanticism. Towards national art. „ They write the titles of the works and formulate conclusions about the features of painting of the indicated period.

Introduction

  1. The teacher determines the purpose of the lesson: the pupils learn examples of romantic painting characteristic of the period of „storm and pressure”. The teacher who learns the criteria for success together with the students.

  2. Eager students present the news and impressions from the visit to the National Museum in Krakow prepared before the lesson.

Realization

  1. Eager students present the political and social situation of Europe at the end of the Enlightenment. The teacher completes information on the elements of the romantic worldview (individualism, fascination with nature).

  2. Students perform interactive task No. 1 - they write out the characteristics of the Sturm und Drang period and their associations with it. They give examples of paintings from this period.

  3. Students get acquainted with the content of the interactive scheme regarding romantic painting (examples of works discussing their subject matter), and then discuss which paintings particularly interest them, and try to indicate the features of romantic painting.

  4. Work in groups. Each team represents a group of curators who plan to exhibit artworks from the „storm and pressure” period. They determine with each other what works will be on their exhibition. They prepare a list, and in addition to five of them - more detailed descriptions. After the appointed time, they present the results of their work on the class forum. They justify the selection of such, and not other, artistic works, pointing to their characteristics.

Summary

  1. The teacher assesses the students' work during the lesson, taking into account their input and commitment. For this purpose, he may prepare a self‑assessment questionnaire.

  2. The teacher asks: If there was going to be a test on the material we have covered today, what questions do you think would you have to answer?
    If the students do not manage to name all the most important questions, the teacher may complement their suggestions.

Homework

  1. Learn words from vocabulary. Record your own version. Check your spelling with the records from the abstract.

  2. Make a short guide about museums where you can see important - in your opinion - works of romantic art.

The period of „Sturm und Drang” in painting

Visit virtual National Museum in Krakow. Visit the Gallery of 19th‑century Polish Art in the Kraków Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) – focus on the room: „Romanticism, towards national art”.

The beginning of the 19th century was a time of Napoleonic wars and political conflicts in Europe. The uprisings in Greece against the Ottoman Empire, in Spain fighting against the French Empire or in Poland struggling with the three invaders favored the emergence of a new, emotionally involved civic attitude.
