Discussion – does any line that is a plot of a function, have to go through the beginning of the coordinate system? If we move the plot of the function y = ax up or down along the Y axis, what will be the formula of a function whose plot is such a line?

Students together identify the general formula of a function whose plot is a line that is not parallel to the Y axis. The teacher says that such function is called a linear functionlinear functionlinear function.

Definiton of a linear function.

- Function f with the variable x determined by the formula f(x) = ax + b, where a and b are defined real numbers, is called a linear function.

Task
Students work individually, using computers. Their task is to observe properties of the plot of a linear function.

An extra task:
There are two functions f(x) = 2x - 4 and g(x) = -x + 2. Calculate z if we know that 
f(z + 1) = g(2z).

The teacher sums up and evaluates pairs’ work and clarifies doubts. A pair that did exercises from each tables and did the extra task as the first one gets the highest mark. Next two pairs get the second highest mark.
