IX. Optics. The student:

4) analyses the path of rays coming out of a point in different directions, and then reflected off a plane mirror and spherical mirrors; describes the focusing of rays in a concave mirror and the path of rays reflected off a convex mirror; uses the concepts of focal point and focal length;

8) constructs the images created by the lens; distinguishes real, virtual, upright, inverted images; compares the size of the object and image.

Discussion

What characteristics from the physics point of view has your imageimageimage in a mirror?

Proceduremef07691ce96d23c5_1528446435040_0Procedure

Experiment
Does a candle burn underwater?

Materials:
- transparent CD box,
- candle,
- beaker filled with water,
- ruler.

Procedure:
In a dark room put a CD box on the table.

Hint:
Opening the box makes it more stable. In front of the box place a burning candle, behind the box place a beaker.

1. How should you place the CD box, to make an illusion that the candle burns underwater?

2. Draw a diagramdiagramdiagram in your exercise book.

3. Look at different angles from the candle side at its imageimageimage. What do you observe?

4. Measure the distancedistancedistance between a burning candle and the box as well as the distancedistancedistance between the box and the beaker. Remember to measure the distances between the middle of the candle/beaker and the middle of the CD box. Repeat the measurement for different positions of the candle. The image should be always at the same place in the beaker.

Summary:
The CD box should be placed perpendicularly to the line between the candle and the beaker. The distancedistancedistance between the image and the box is equal to that between the imageimageimage and the box. Regardless of the angle at which we look at the image, it stays always at the same place.

Task
Based on the experiment draw a diagram showing the formation of the virtual image of the candle. Do not forget to apply the law of light reflection.mef07691ce96d23c5_1527752263647_0Based on the experiment draw a diagram showing the formation of the virtual image of the candle.
