Lesson stages

Introductionm03046148c2958a1f_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: identifying cuboids and discovering their construction and the properties.

Many objects in our surroundings are in a shape of cuboid e.g. shoe box Rubik’s cube.

Procedurem03046148c2958a1f_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher uses the boxes as the models of the cuboids. Identifies the vertices, face and edges. He presents the models in different positions. He shows the box with equal edges to point out that such cuboid is called the cube.

Task 1

The student specify the number of the vertices, edges and faces of the cuboid. They point out:m03046148c2958a1f_1527752263647_0specify the number of the vertices, edges and faces of the cuboid. They point out:

the edges coming out one vertex,

parallel edges,

equal edges,

parallel faces.

Conclusion:m03046148c2958a1f_1527752256679_0Conclusion:

The points where the edges of the cuboid meet are called the vertices. The cuboid has got eight vertices.

Every cuboid has got twelve edges.

Every cuboid has got six faces  whose are the rectangles.

Discussion:  – what common features have the cuboid and the cube? What is the difference between them?

Conclusion:

  • All faces of the cubes are the squares.

  • All edges of the cube are of the equal length.

SLIDESHOW

The students work individually using their computer. They are going to watch how to draw the cuboid.

The students use their abilities to solve the tasks.

Task 2

Draw the cuboid. Mark the parallel edges with same colour.

Task 3

Draw the cube. Indicate with red the vertices of one face.

Task  4

Jack has built the frame of the cuboid using the sticks of 10 cm, 5 cm and 4 cm. calculate the sum of the edges of that cuboid.

An extra task:

Tom has made the model of cuboid using the wire and the modelling clay. The dimensions of the cuboid are 5 cm x 10 cm x 15 cm. how many centimetres of wire did he use?

Lesson summarym03046148c2958a1f_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarizing the class.

Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusions to memorize:

Each cuboid has got six faces which are rectangles. Two of them are the bases and the other two are lateral faces.

The sides of a rectangles in the cuboid are called edges. There are base and lateral edges.

The points where the edges meet are called the vertices of the cuboid.

Three edges come out from each vertex of the cuboid.

The cuboid with all equal edges is called a cube.
