XIII. The elements of descriptive statistics. The student:

1) selects and organises data;

2) reads and interprets the data presented in texts, tables, graphs and diagrams, e.g. the values presented in graphs, the lowest and the highest value, describes trends and the results displayed by specifying the change of the data values, including the following expressions: the values increase, the values decrease, the values are constant.

Lesson stages

Introductionm7774346757a0d558_1528450127855_0Introduction

Teacher reminds the students that they read and interpreted data presented in the tables and diagrams during the previous lessons.

Procedurem7774346757a0d558_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher informs the students that they are going to analyse and interpret data presented in a graphical way.

Task 1

The students analyse the data presented in the scatter plotscatter plotscatter plot. It shows the air temperature measured for five consecutive days.

[Illustration 1]

The students look at the graph and give the following information:

a) the value of the temperature on the second day.
b) the value of the temperature on the fifth day.
c) the days when the temperature was the lowest.
d) the days when the temperature was the highest.
e) calculate the arithmetic mean of the air temperature during these days.

The teacher joins the points of the graph and presents method of creating a linear graphlinear graphlinear graph to the students.

Such graphs can be seen in newspapers or on the Internet.

Task 2

The graph shows the mid Euro exchange rate between 22 nd of March and 19 th of April 2018.m7774346757a0d558_1527752263647_0The graph shows the mid Euro exchange rate between 22 nd of March and 19 th of April 2018.

[Illustration 2]

The students read the following information:

a) the highest Euro rate.
b) the lowest Euro rate.
c) whether the Euro exchange rate decreased or increased during a particular period.

Task 3

Using the scatter plotscatter plotscatter plot the students complete the sentences below.

The air temperature in a seaside village was measured at 12 p.m. and 10 p.m. for 8 days and written down on the information board.m7774346757a0d558_1532699450498_0The air temperature in a seaside village was measured at 12 p.m. and 10 p.m. for 8 days and written down on the information board.

[Illustration 3]

On the basis of the graph the students complete the following sentences:

a) The highest temperature was observed on……. .
b) The smallest difference between the temperatures during the day and at night is …………. .
c) The temperature during the day was 30°C on ….… and ….… .
d) The lowest temperature at night was observed on ……… .

An extra task:

Zosia lives in Czestochowa and her friend Jan lives in Sydney. They decided to measure the air temperature at 12 o’clock for a week and write down the results in the tabletabletable.

Zosia made the following table.

[Table 1]

Jan made the following table.

[Table 2]

Draw two scatter plots illustrating the change of the air temperature in Czestochowa and Sydney (use two different colours).

a) Read the values of the temperature in Czestochowa and Sydney. Note the dates. What can you notice?
b) What temperature was in Sydney on 25 th of July?
c) What temperature was in Czestochowa on 26 th of July?
d) In what city was the temperature higher and by how many degrees?
e) On which day was the temperature the lowest in Czestochowa and what was its value?
f) On which day was the temperature the highest in Sydney and what was its value?
g) For how many days did the temperature in Sydney remain the same?

Lesson summarym7774346757a0d558_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarizing the class. Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusion to memorize:

- Data can be read using the scatter plotscatter plotscatter plot or the linear chart.

- We can draw a scatter plot on the basis of the tabletabletable.
