Grades VII and VIII

I. Understanding, analysing and solving problems.

2) In solving problems the student uses basic algorithms of:

b) searching and ordering. The student also finds an element in an ordered set and orders elements in the set using the method of simple selection and counting.

Introductionmbf7d8aa860f0d636_1528450127855_0Introduction

Task:

Before the lesson learn the concept of sortingsortingsorting.

Discussion:

During the lesson students answer the following questions:

- What is an ordered and unordered set?

- Explain the concept of ordering a set.

- Give examples of set orderings.

- Why is it important to sort a set? What benefits does it bring?

On the basis of the discussion students formulate the definition of sortingsortingsorting .

Definition:
Sorting – one of the basic issues of computer science. It consists in ordering a set of data according to certain characteristics of every element of the set.mbf7d8aa860f0d636_1527752263647_0Sorting – one of the basic issues of computer science. Task:

Open the applet and sort the numbers from the smallest to the largest.

[Geogebra applet]

Discussion:

Give examples of ordering that you can see everyday. What data can be sorted in Excel and how?

The simplest example of sorting is sorting data arranged in one column or a row:
 - sorting text,
 - sorting numbers,
 - sorting dates or times.
mbf7d8aa860f0d636_1527752256679_0The simplest example of sorting is sorting data arranged in one column or a row:
 - sorting text,
 - sorting numbers,
 - sorting dates or times.

Task:

Enter any 5 numbers, dates and texts (words or sentences) into separate columns in the worksheet. Sort them using the ‘Sort’ tool. Learn how to change the orderorderorder of sortingsortingsorting : ascending/descending (A‑Z/Z‑A).

Task:

Now enter any 5 numbers in one rowrowrow in the worksheet. Sort them in an ascending and descending orderorderorder .

Hint:

Sort from left to right. Select ‘Options’ in the ‘Sort’ tool dialogue box and click “Sort left to right”.

Task:

Check how texts including lowercase and uppercase letters are sorted - how the cells containing for example: ala, Ala, aLA, aLa, AlA will be sorted.

Hint:

Most often our data are large sets of information stored in many rows and columns of the spreadsheet. That is why we need to sort whole rows or columns. In such a case the key element of sortingsortingsorting is to select the worksheet area which will be sorted (see also: Tables – at the end of the document). Most often incorrect selection of the sorting area leads to data loss.

Sort order
ascending (A‑Z):
- numbers – from the smallest to the largest,
- text – alphabetical order from A to Z,
- dates – from the oldest to the newest.
descending (Z‑A):
- numbers – from the largest to the smallest,
- text – alphabetical order from Z to A,
- dates – from the newest to the oldest.

ascending (A‑Z):
- numbers – from the smallest to the largest,
- text – alphabetical order from A to Z,
- dates – from the oldest to the newest.
descending (Z‑A):
- numbers – from the largest to the smallest,
- text – alphabetical order from Z to A,
- dates – from the newest to the oldest.

Advanced task:

If Excel cannot sort given data itself, we can select particular parts of the data by using other functions. These parts can be sorted separately.
