Introductionm0e25021791f335d1_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher starts a conversation about clocks and time.

- What devices are used to measure time?
- When is it important to know the exact hourhourhour?
- How many hours a day does an average student spend at school?
- How many minutes is the mathematics class?
- What time is it now on the class clock?

Procedurem0e25021791f335d1_1528446435040_0Procedure

Students work individually, using computers. They open the slideshow and observe how we can measure time.

[Slideshow]

The teacher divides students into four groups.

Students work with the method of task stations. In groups, they do exercises prepared by the teacher. On the tables that symbolise stations there are models of clocks with hands so that students can move the hands and verify their answers. Each group gets point for correct solutions and for the time of solving the exercise. The best group gets the highest marks.

Task 1

- Read the hourhourhour presented on the clock in the Fig. 1 and write it with at least three ways.
- Draw an electronic watch showing the same hour as the clock in the Fig.1.

[Illustration 1]

Task 2

How much time passed from the hourhourhour 8:00 till the hour 14.20? Analyse the example.

[Illustration 2]

Calculate how much time passed.
a) from the hour 16:15 till the hour 16:28
b) from the hour 14:05 till the hour 14:54
c) from the hour 15:55 till the hour 16:20
d) from the hour 8:05 till the hour 17:35
e) from the hour 23:10 till the hour 06:15

A tip – illustrate the examples graphically.

Task 3

- Write how many minutes is:

a) 1 h 25 min
b) 3 h 5 min
c) 2 h 48 min

- Write how many hours and minutes is:

a) 85 min
b) 126 min
c) 360 min

- Calculate how many hours and minutes is:

a) 50 min + 36 min
b) 124 min + 15 min
c) 290 min + 30 min

- Calculate how many hours and minutes is:

- 2 h 30 min + 1 h 16 min
- 3 h 24 min + 5 h 15 min

Task 4

In the picture there is a graph illustrating the solution of the following exercise:

Calculate what time is now, if 5 hours 15 minutes passed from the hour 7:45.

In the same way, calculate what time will be after:

- 1 hour 35 min passes from the hour 6:40
- hour 45 min passes from the hour 14:40

An extra task:

Tomek was sleeping from 21.05 till 7.15. How much time did he sleep? What time did he leave for school, if taking a shower and eating a breakfast took him 25 min?

Lesson summarym0e25021791f335d1_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the revision exercises. Then together they sum‑up the classes, by formulating the conclusions to memorise.

- Hours can be written in different ways
- 7:40 or 7.40 or 7Indeks górny 40
- 1 day = 24 hours
- 1 hour = 60 minutes
- 1 minute = 60 seconds
- 1 quarter = 15 minutes
