Introductionmae2647d1a3e9add6_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher introduces the subject of the lesson – reading statistical datareading statistical datareading statistical data presented in the form of tables, bar charts and pie charts.

Students bring diagrams cut from various newspapers, posters, etc. In groups, they analyse what information can be read from diagrams.

Proceduremae2647d1a3e9add6_1528446435040_0Procedure

Task
Students work individually, using computers. Their task is to observe the percentage distribution of population in the world, according to age.

[Interactive illustration]

From the graph presenting the percentage distribution of population in the world, according to age we can read various information:
1. The greatest percent of people in the world is between 15 and 64 years old.
2. There is four times more kids up to the age of 14 than adults older than 64.
3. Statistically, every fourth man in the world is younger than 15 years old.

Students’ conclusions:

- Statistical data is often presented in the form of various diagrams and tables. Most common are bar charts and pie charts.
- Based on diagrams and tales we can read conclusions about statistical data.

Group work:

Students work in groups, using the method of the idea rug. The teacher gives each group a diagram describing statistical datastatistical datastatistical data. Students’ task is to read this data and interpret them. They write proposition of solution on a ‘rug’ and present it to other groups.

Students still work in groups. Each group creates a thematical poster from prepare materials, with minimum three different diagrams. The poster has to be consistent and interesting graphically. They write information and conclusion under each diagram.

Groups discuss posters one by one and obtained information. The teacher evaluates students’ work and clarifies doubts.

An extra task:
Look for information about the surface of voivodeships in Poland. Read and write most important information about greatest and smallest voivodeships in Poland.

Students do the revision exercises.

Then together they sum‑up the classes, by formulating the conclusions to memorise.
