XIII. The elements of descriptive statistics. The student:

1) selects and organises the data;

2) reads and interprets the data presented in texts, tables, graphs and diagrams, e.g. the values presented in graphs, the lowest and the highest value, describes trends and the results displayed by specifying the change of the data values, including the following expressions: the values increase, the values decrease, the values are constant.

Introductionm1f207e9bb698777c_1528450127855_0Introduction

Teacher starts a discussion about the methods of presenting data in a graphical way.

The texts which include a lot of information and numbers are clearer, if we use illustrations, tables and diagrams while we organize, analyse and memorise the data.

We can often see charts in the newspapers and on TV which present the results of elections or surveys.

Procedurem1f207e9bb698777c_1528446435040_0Procedure

The students together analyse the results of the same test presented in the form of the bar diagramdiagramdiagram and the pie chart.pie chartpie chart. They discuss the results they have obtained by reading these diagrams.

Students should notice that you can get the following information by reading each diagramdiagramdiagram:
- what mark the majority and the minority of the students got,
- which marks have the same number,
- the number of students who got 3 was lesser or greater than the students who got 2.

Some of the information is easier to read by using one type of diagram.m1f207e9bb698777c_1527752263647_0Some of the information is easier to read by using one type of diagram..

By using the bar diagram you can read the following information:
- the number of grades 6,
- the number of students who wrote the test,
- how many more grades 5 than 3 there were.

By using the pie chartpie chartpie chartyou can read the following information:
- the percentage of students who got grade 5,
- whether the students who have got the grade 5 represent half of all the students writing the test.

Task 1
The students present in the pie chart the datadatadata from the bar diagramdiagramdiagram concerning the percentage of students who took part in the interest groups. At Ann’s school every student of grades 4‑8 takes part in a one of the interest groups. Look at the bar diagram and read the data showing the percentage of students taking part in such groups. Present the datadatadata using the pie chartpie chartpie chart.

Task 2
The students make the diagramdiagramdiagram sowing the division of the state forests into coniferous and deciduous ones. Coniferous trees cover 78% of the state forests in Poland. The rest of the area is occupied by deciduous trees. Present these datadatadata using the pie chart.

Task 3
Using the pie chartpie chartpie chart the students present the datadatadata concerning the percentage share of tree species in Poland.

[table]

The survey concerning the understanding of simple texts in different foreign languages was conducted among 20 students. The result of the survey was presented in the following diagrams:

[interactive graphics]

[diagram]

- How many students understand simple texts in one foreign language?
- In which foreign language do the majority of the class understand simple texts?

Lesson summarym1f207e9bb698777c_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarizing the class.

Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusion to memorize:
While drawing the pie chart one should remember to write the title and the key of the diagram.
