The civil rights movement was born out of a need for creating a society in which African Americans and other people of colour are treated with respect and can enjoy the same treatment as all the other citizens. When the movement gained momentum it was mid‑20th century and black people still experienced numerous cases of racially motivated violence and discrimination. The fight was neither short nor easy. Do you know what acts of discrimination black people had to suffer? How successful were the initiatives undertaken by the movement’s activists? Study the mind map below to find out.
