I would like to see the hobbit hole, because it seems quite extraordinary that you can actually live in it. Besides, I am a fan of Tolkien’s books, so it would really be something special to me. Another house which I would like to see is a mansion, as I have never been in such a grand place. It both sounds and looks impressive.
I would never like to live in a block of flats because it seems to be terribly boring and it’s nothing unusual. Also, living in a castle doesn’t appeal to me at all; I think it must be pretty cold there and it probably generates huge maintenance costs.

HANOK
The traditional architecture of a hanok makes use of materials like wood, earth, and stone, which can be easily found in the surrounding environment. With their wooden frames and characteristically curved roofs, hanok houses are very photogenic.

According to tradition, hanoks should face a river and have a mountain to the rear. This idea represents the value of life which should be lived in harmony with the surrounding environment. Hanok architecture is unique because it combines two theoretically incompatible elements together: each hanok has an underfloor heating system and a wide wooden floor area called maru, which is a structure for cooling. Since wood is vulnerable to fire, no architect would place these two elements together, yet in a hanok they have coexisted for centuries. The houses are passed from generation to generation without changing any of their basic aspects. Many of these traditional Korean houses have been transformed into hotels, homestays, or holiday rentals.

TRULLO
Many people think that trulli look like houses taken from a fairy tale, so it’s no wonder they pique curiosity among tourists. They were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses, but also as permanent dwellings by small‑scale landowners. Today they are homes, hotels, and boutiques. The largest trullo in Alberobello, where you can see 1,500 trulli grouped together, has been converted into a museum.

The trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields, with no mortar or other building material to hold the stones together. They use a prehistoric building technique of a corbelled roof, which is still used in the region of Alberobello in southern Italy. The roofs of buildings often have mythological or religious markings in white ash and they cumulate around a pinnacle, which was believed to ward off evil influences or bad luck. There are many theories about why such a type of house can be found only in this region of Europe, one of them saying that it was because of their relatively easy construction and deconstruction, which could be used by the Apulians as an argument for not paying the tax on finished houses.

RIADS
Riads used to be the houses of the wealthiest citizens, merchants, and courtiers. A lot of riads nowadays have been transformed into boutique hotels or guesthouses and are very popular among tourists visiting Morocco, so no visit to this country is considered complete without staying in one.

Riads take their name from the Arabic word for garden, which is a characteristic feature of this type of building. A typical riad generally has two or more levels built around the central rectangular courtyard with a garden and upper balconies overlooking the lower floor. Riads are traditionally open at the top, allowing fresh air, sunlight, or birds to enter the property. This type of building can only be found in the medinas, old walled centers of a Moroccan city. The inward‑focus of life in riads allows families to enjoy privacy. This is in accordance with the Islamic beliefs of Arab society; women can enjoy solace within the walls of their home, with no outer windows to let strangers see their private life.

RONDAVELS
A rondavel is a traditional African‑style house which has a round shape and a thatched roof. It is traditionally made with materials that can be obtained in raw form locally. Some people elaborately carve, paint, or decorate the outside wall that has been finished off with dung. Rondavels normally cool when it’s hot, and warm when it’s cold.

Rondavels have a significant meaning and are a symbol of African heritage. In a rural environment on farms no or little effort goes into the design of a rondavel, so they can be built on demand, with no planning process prior to construction. Although they are rather small buildings with a single undivided space, once inside you experience the illusion that the single room is “big,” because there are no corners. The complete absence of corners and the lack of experiencing the perception of “near” and “far” sets the mind at peace and creates a pleasing sense of place.

STILT HOUSES
Stilt houses are houses built on elevated platforms. They can be built in a variety of locations, but are most typical of tropical countries. They are usually constructed above water, but may also be built on sand or dry land.

Stilt houses, in some regions also called palafitte, are raised on piles over the surface of water. They are built primarily as a protection against flooding, because they are usually found in places where heavy rain is prevalent, but they are also designed to be just high enough not to let vermin like snakes and insects enter the house. Additionally, their roofs are sloped, which allows the rainwater to easily stream down, not damaging the property.

CUBE HOUSES IN THE NETHERLANDS
The Cube Houses are a popular tourist attraction in the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and are a collection of 39 modern houses. They were designed by a Dutch architect Piet Blom, who drew his inspiration from forests and trees and wanted to create a conceptual urban forest. The walls of each cube are angled at 54 degrees, creating a surreal visual effect from the inside and out.

The Cube Houses were designed in such a way so as to optimise public space: since the living areas are above ground, they allow extra room for pedestrians and retail stores. There are two floors above the ground floor entryway: on the first floor there is a living room and a kitchen, the second floor includes two bedrooms and a bathroom. Most of the cubes are privately owned.

SKATEBOARD HOUSE IN MALIBU
The skateboard house, based in Malibu, California, was designed by an architect and a skateboarder. Essentially, it’s a skatepark turned into a home. Its walls are arched and the roof is curved to make it ready to skate, even all the furniture is skateable! The fluid layout lets the owner skate from one room to another without having to stop.

THE KERET HOUSE IN POLAND
Keret house, also known as the world’s thinnest house, is both a structure and an art installation located in Warsaw, Poland. It fills a space of only 1.3 m between two houses in the Warsaw district of Wola and was designed by architect Jakub Szczęsny for the Israeli writer of Polish origin, Etgar Keret. It is 14 square meters large, and is 122 cm in the widest place, and only 72 in the narrowest. Inside, there is everything there should be in a house: a living room space with a footrest, a kitchen, a desk for study or work, and a toilet integrated with a shower.

TRANSCRIPTazurewhite
Both Keret’s parents come from Poland and survived the Second World War, his mother in the Warsaw ghetto, his father in an unidentified town in a tiny, secret hiding place. At the opening of Keret House in 2012, he said that for his mother it was like giving their family name to a place from which it was attempted to be erased. Keret is a Hebrew surname that his father adopted in Israel, which means “a city.”

STONE HOUSE
Casa do Penedo is a type of “prehistoric” house located in the north of Portugal. The house, which is also known as “Castle of Stone” was built between four giant stones originally found in the area. It was built in 1972. Built by engineer Guimarães, the castle was supposed to be a rural escape for the holidays for a local family.

Zdjęcie ukazuje mały domek wydrążony w podłużnej skale. Z jej przodu wygładzono fragment konstrukcji, aby osadzić w nim czarne drzwi i okienko nad nimi. W podobny sposób wygładzono górę kamienia, aby utworzyć dwuspadowy daszek. Po lewej stronie konstrukcji wystaje długi, blaszany kominek. Domek stoi na szczycie porośniętej trawą góry, w tle widać błękitne niebo.

The Stone House called in Portuguese Casa do Ponedo is made of just 4 local boulders. It was originally designed as a holiday home. The building is beautifully integrated into the surrounding nature. There is no electricity supply, but it doesn't make the living conditions uncomfortable. The house has two storeys connected by a wooden staircase. The ground floor has a cosy living room and kitchen, while the first floor is the bedroom. The natural shape of one of the boulders has made an outdoor swimming pool that adds to the wild image of the house. Due to its unusual design, Casa do Ponedo has become a major tourist attraction of northern Portugal and hosts a small museum of its own history.
