Florence Nightingale revolutionised nursing. She was actively involved in providing medical help to soldiers during the Crimean War. It was her decision to ensure that the clothes and the bedding were clean. She also checked if the soldiers were well fed. In order to show the scale of unnecessary deaths of soldiers, she collected statistical data and presented it visually by means of a coxcomb diagram. Owing to her efforts, the standards of nursing were elevated and nursing began to be considered appropriate for educated ladies from affluent families.

Nursing Now and Then

Modern nursing is far from what it used to be like in the nineteenth century.
In the past, it was more difficult for patients to recover because of poor standards of nursing care. Since then, there have been a number of changes that have greatly contributed to the wellbeing of patients.

Previously, many patients died because of poor sanitary conditions in hospitals. There was neither clean bedding nor fresh air in the rooms where patients stayed. What is more, the wards were overcrowded and there was limited access to toilets. Patients couldn’t bathe regularly and the meals that they were receiving lacked nutritional value. Such conditions often resulted in serious infections or even led to deaths.

Fortunately, nursing care has significantly improved. With the development of science and medicine, there is a greater awareness of the need for hygiene to prevent the spread of viruses and bacterias. Clothes and bed linens in hospitals are regularly changed and washed. Surgeries are performed in sterile conditions. A lot of materials used by medical staff including needles and gloves are single‑use.

Nowadays, nurses do not only look after patients' physical condition but they also take care of their mental health. Human organism is perceived more holistically and modern nursing takes it into account. Nurses support patients in their recovery encouraging them to be proactive about their health. Their role is also to educate their patients on healthy lifestyle habits and self‑care.

All in all, we are lucky to enjoy the benefits of modern nursing and we should be grateful to all the people who have dedicated their lives to caring for patients and improving nursing standards.
