Breeding seeds is not a skill added to mankind’s portfolio with the appearance of modern bioengineering. It’s something we’ve been doing since the dawn of agriculture. First, it was by selecting the best specimens of plants among the crops to be planted the next season. With time people worked out more precise methods of spotting, choosing, and recreating the desired characteristics of the crops. Nowadays, thanks to seed improvement, farmers can count on more consistent and increased crop yields, and their produce stays fresh for longer. This system, unfortunately, has its dark sides. What are they?
