Many people have a family history of diseases that they are anxious could be passed on to their children. Our job here is not only to help those who can’t conceive, but also those who want to make sure their kids will be healthy. I’m familiar with the opinions that there should be more legal restrictions on embryo screening, but to my mind we’re giving these people a chance to have healthy kids.

We went to this clinic the other day. After trying for a baby for years, it was time to turn to fertility doctors. We were told at the clinic that in vitro would probably work for us. It is so exciting to hear that! Scientists can do such unbelievable things nowadays! My problem is they’d create more than one embryo, when we just want one kid. I’m not sure what to do, though my husband doesn’t seem worried.

People are so excited about genetics these days. Genome this, genome that, CRISPR, genes responsible for inherited diseases, genes responsible for obesity or red hair... Fantastic! Except maybe we should slow down and ask ourselves what happens later. We start changing our DNA left and right, it’s like messing with the very structure of who we are. Maybe the people who are so eager to do it should stop and ask who gave them the right to reinvent human beings, you know?

It’s unbelievable, it’s like figuring out a puzzle that holds the answers to questions about the very structure of life. Answers that religious people might say only God knows. And it’s a group effort of thousands of scientists from all over the world, which is equally amazing. Everyone figures out bits and pieces of the DNA code and chips in, saying ‘listen, this gene is responsible for this and that,” adding to our knowledge. It’s fantastic to be part of this project!

Someone who’s not in my shoes cannot even imagine what it’s like. You learn to live with your condition and you never really blame your parents for it. I mean, both my dad and my granddad have to live with it, too. The way I see it – thank God embryo screenings are legal and science can help the next generations. When the time comes to have kids, I’m the first one through the fertility clinic door, so that they can help me choose a healthy embryo.
