Once you’ve been assigned the country you’re going to represent at the conference, you can start researching it. It’s always a good idea to go through the Background Guide, which will include all important information regarding where to begin looking for information and what is expected from the delegates. MUN websites also offer comprehensive lists of links to websites where you can find all relevant data. You will need to learn about your country’s economy and history, its strong and weak sides and - an important point - in what blocks you can find allies to support your ideas for resolutions.

Bear in mind what committee you’re writing your Position Paper for. Stick to the topic and present your country’s position directly in relation to the issue that your committee will be dealing with. 

Introduce the reader to the topic as seen from the perspective of your country. Provide some background of the situation and try to present it in a broader context. Don’t forget to mention countries that you’d like to support your policy. That’s very important as you cannot pass a resolution alone. You need to convince other countries that supporting you is in everybody’s interest.

At this point, you are expected to present policies that your country has used so far to deal with the issue. Describe both successes and failures and try to provide reasons for both. List some facts and statistics to fully illustrate your state’s approach. Show that you have a good understanding of your country's policies. 

This section is not always necessary, but if you feel that presenting some case studies will help your position, that’s the section to describe it. You may also want to add some information about the issue from a different angle. However, make sure all information clearly and directly contributes to the whole document. Avoid repetition or mentioning data that does not forward your case in any way. 

This is a crucial section in which you will provide an outline of the possible solutions to the problems. Your purpose is to formulate a strong Call to Action which in a form of a resolution will be accepted and implemented by your committee. Remember to focus on proposing policies which are in the remit of your committee. It’s also advisable to make your policies SMART, that is specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and timely. 

Your Position Paper should not be longer than 2 pages. The Background Guide will include information about font type and size, margins and spaces between the lines, so don’t try to go around it. If you write a longer document, remember that only the first two pages will be taken into account in the assessment process for giving awards.
