Presenter: In today’s program “From Past into Present” we are talking about school and how it has altered throughout the years. We will present a few people of different ages who are going to tell us what education was like when they attended school. So listen as we move back in time. Perhaps you will find something in common with your learning experience.

Person 1. (around 60, Marisa)

My great‑grandfather, John Fowler, was born at the end of the 19th century and was the first person in his family who attended school. It was something big, his family was so proud of him because they were hoping he would get education and become a highly qualified white‑collar worker, not a farmer. My great‑grandfather used to go to a village school. It was a one‑room schoolhouse, they had one teacher for all subjects and the students from the same class were of different ages. Grandpa John didn’t have a notebook. He took notes on a slate with chalk. He learnt how to read and write on it. Now these are perceived as obsolete.

One day, he and the other pupils got into trouble because they put some oil on the teacher’s board and he couldn’t write on it. They boys were punished. Teachers used corporal punishment in those days, so they all got caned and they had to clean the whole classroom. This is one of the things I don’t like about old‑fashioned schools. I can’t imagine how you could beat the child.

Person 2. (around 50, Anna)

I had a great‑aunt who went to school during the Second World War. It was a terrible time for everyone because it was dangerous. She went to a girls’ school and had to study basic subjects like English, maths, and history. Rote learning was very popular because hardly any students had their own textbooks. Professors’ lessons were mostly lectures but they also assessed students’ knowledge by giving them tests. Auntie Mary was academically gifted and aimed high. She was a straight‑A student and she didn’t take her studying lightly. After the war she went to university and when she graduated from it, she became a teacher herself. Auntie Mary never used corporal punishment, instead she motivated her pupils and encouraged them to work hard and if they did something wrong, she gave them detention, so told them to stay after school and they played educational games to revise the material covered in class.

Person 3. (around 60, Sibil)

When I attended school, every school year seemed to last forever. I didn’t like learning because we had mostly lectures and I was quite a poor student. I was constantly losing my notebooks and textbooks and, although I lived near the school, I was always late for class. My teachers were okay, they really tried hard to enhance my learning process, but it wasn’t until I met Miss Jenkins that I realised that studying could be fun and entertaining. She knew how to encourage her pupils, we did some things by experimentation, we went on trips to the forest to learn about different phenomena in practice. Thanks to Miss Jenkins I accomplished what I had wanted. I didn’t have any answers wrong on tests anymore. And she didn’t put stress on standardised testing all the time. She perceived her students as individuals who needed a different approach to make use of the learning process to the maximum.

Person 4. (around 40, James)

School in the 80s and 90s was traditional compared to what my daughters experienced in the 21st century. First of all, we didn’t have big access to computers and the internet, so most of the knowledge I acquired was from books which I took out from the library. Me and my fellow students spent a lot of time revising in a reading room, we exchanged notes, and organized study groups. Teachers were strict but fair, they organised many extracurricular activities and interest groups because they placed importance on enhancing our learning process. Thanks to them, nearly everyone from my class went to college.

I remember my biology teacher, Mr. Oliver – we did a lot of experiments in class and it wasn’t only him who did them. Each and everyone of us used a microscope and learnt how to grow plants. He believed in facilitating our education and wanted us to become curious and skillful individuals.

Person 5. (around 20, Lara)

I’m a university student and my approach to learning has fairly changed from when I was in high school. We have a variety of classes – lectures, practical classes, and discussions. All of these let me gain as much knowledge as I can. During discussions, our professors want to instill us in critical thinking and give us many problem‑solving tasks to inspire us to think outside the box and teach us to draw conclusions. Because the use of computers, interactive boards, and the internet has moved from the fringe to the norm, some of our classes are run online and we use e‑learning platforms, interactive tools, and applications. They are really useful and we especially enjoy gamification. Sometimes we play against each other, sometimes we are made to work as a team. Regardless of the type, I believe it further enhances and facilitates studying.

Study the recordings again. Then, type in the words you find there to fill in the text. 1. In the 19th century students used a sTu uzupełnij and chalk to take notes. 2. How do you rTu uzupełnij the material before the test? I read my notes and have a look at homework which my teacher assessed and analyse my wrong answers. 3. In our classroom, we can use online dictionaries. It really fTu uzupełnij the learning process. Online applications are easily used. 4. Many teaching techniques, such as rote learning, have become oTu uzupełnij and needed to be substituted with new ones based on the idea of an interactive classroom. 5. When I go to a library, I nearly always tTu uzupełnij out books and study them at home but some books are supposed to be used only in the library, so I learn from them in a rTu uzupełnij room. 6. After school, students from my school can aTu uzupełnij extracurricular classes, for example a drama group, choir, ceramics, or sports classes. 7. Very few professors enhance the learning process using gTu uzupełnij because they don’t believe that playing games is a productive way of gaining new knowledge. 8. I must say, I’m not academically gTu uzupełnij. I’m quite average in most subjects, but I do know a lot about chemistry. My best friend is a straight-A sTu uzupełnij. 9. In my opinion, we should get rid of cTu uzupełnij punishment from every school. Physical violence isn’t the proper way to make students behave well in class. 10. Modern learning is supposed to be about understanding concepts, dTu uzupełnij conclusions, and thinking oTu uzupełnij the box. 11. Mike has to stay in dTu uzupełnij for having a fight with another student from his class. I wonder what the teachers will make him do as punishment? 12. I gTu uzupełnij from college in 2018 and then continued my education at Harvard University.
