In 1903, two American inventors named Wilbur and Orville Wright designed, built, and flew the first airplane. Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, in Indiana. Orville Wright was born on August 19, 1871, in Ohio.

The young Wright brothers made and repaired bicycles. After that they became interested in gliders. A glider is a type of flying machine with no engine. After studying gliders, the Wright brothers decided to build an airplane. In 1903 the Wrights built their first airplane.

On the 17th of December, 1903, Orville made the first flight in the airplane. He flew 137 meters in 12 seconds. 

In 1908 the Wright brothers sold an airplane to the U.S. Army. Then they began showing airplanes in the United States and Europe. They soon became famous. In 1909 the Wrights started the Wright Company. The company built airplanes in Dayton, USA. 

Wilbur died in 1912 in Dayton. Orville Wright ran company, and then he sold it in 1915. He continued to work as an inventor until he died in 1948.
