An important role in the fire-fighting system is played by hand-operated fire-fighting equipment.
□
□
Hand-operated fire-fighting equipment can be used successfully at any phase of a fire.
□
□
Hand-pump extinguishers consist of a tank with a built-in piston pump with a hose ended with a nozzle.
□
□
Hand-pump extinguishers are only adapted to administer foam.
□
□
Fire extinguishers need to be discharged in close proximity to the source of the fire.
□
□
Fire blankets are used to isolate the burning material from the influx of fresh air.
□
□
Fire beaters consist of two parts: a metal, working part, and a wooden handle.
□
□
Fire beaters are used to extinguish burning grasses and barren lands by pouring water on the burning vegetation.

Types of forest fires and their consequences

From the perspective of forest management, the most dangerous threats to the forest are fires. They are divided into the following categories.
● Ground firesm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279637332_0Ground fires, also referred to as underground fires.
They rarely occur in Poland. They break out mostly during long droughtsm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279718401_0droughts. The fire consumes layers of turfm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279733582_0turf, muckm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279738479_0muck and sometimes seams of brown coal. The most common cause of such fires is lighting fires on moorsm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279743621_0moors. Usually, such fires are noticed only after some time, and it’s incredibly difficult to get them under control. It can take even a few months. Only a dynamic extinguishing action yields a positive outcome. It involves burrowing the layers of turf or muck up to the bedrock.
● Surface firesm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279748379_0Surface fires, also referred to as crawling fires.
This category of fires is the most common in Poland. The materials feeding the fire are: theground coverm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279753543_0ground cover, litterm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279762480_0litter, humusm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1531994880464_0humus, as well as down woody debris, brushwoodm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279767416_0brushwood, the understorym731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1531994972424_0understory and saplingsm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279772536_0saplings.
● Crown firesm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279777622_0Crown fires, also referred to as canopy fires.
Such fires spread among treetops and occur mostly in pine tree stands. They often result from surface fires, through treetops of smaller trees and hanging branches. Depending on the force of the wind and air currents, the speed with which crown fires spread ranges from a few to a few dozen kilometers per hour. Under particularly favorable weather conditions, crown fires can take on the size of a cataclysm.
● Fires of single trees.
They usually occur as a result of lighting fires in old, rotten tree hollowsm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279782995_0hollows, or as a result of lightning strikes. Fires of this type aren’t significant for forest management, but they do have to be carefully extinguishedm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497279787842_0extinguished ** as they can become the source of fires for neighboring parts of the tree stand.

Journalist: What is a fire dangerm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292341857_0fire danger?
Forester: It’s the existence of conditions under which it’s possible for a forest fire to break out.
Journalist: How does that come about?
Forester: The conditions that influence forest fire dangers are, among others, meteorological conditionsm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292338305_0meteorological conditions, including:air temperaturem731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292330786_0air temperature, relativeair humiditym731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292326285_0air humidity,precipitationm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292312053_0precipitation,cloud coverm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292307534_0cloud cover,sunlightm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292302003_0sunlight. Additionally, soil layer humidity is also important. Fire dangers also result from, e.g., a carelessbonfirem731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292294450_0bonfire, throwing out cigarette ends, matches that aren’t properly blown out.
Journalist: And when do we encounter such dangers most often?
Forester: Usually from April 1st to October 31st. That’s the time when direct operations regardingfire protectionm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292283746_0fire protectionare carried out on the areas of national forests.
Journalist: Is there a fire protection system?
Forester: Yes. It’s based on a network oflookout towersm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292278430_0lookout towers, emergency dispatch posts, wildland fire engines, and a network of forest airbases.
Journalist: Sounds impressive. Is so much preparation really required?
Forester: Unfortunately, yes. The forests in Poland are characterized by high fire dangers. People are responsible for 90% of forest fires.
Journalist: And how do you determine the **fire danger levelm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292272551_0fire danger level?
Forester: On the basis of the humidity of the litter, air and the precipitation rate. In the period from April 1st to October 31st, the measurements are carried out daily and submitted to theForest Servicesm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292265719_0Forest Services. In the period of significant fire dangers, they are also sent to the radio and TV.
Journalist: How many levels of fire dangers are there?
Forester: There are four levels: 0: no danger, I: low danger, II: high danger, III:catastrophicm731fbd4c5cc7ea2a_1497292257697_0catastrophicdanger.

Fighting fires using fire‑fighting airplanes and helicopters
The hypertext material is a fragment of a coordination meeting in a forest inspectorate. A fire protection specialist informs the gathered participants that a forest airbase has begun its operation. It will have 2 airplanes of the Dromader type and one MI‑2 helicopter with a Bambi bucket. The specialist discusses the capabilities of the machines: the amount of carried water, the cruising speed, the time it takes them to reach fires. The specialist describes the operating procedures of the machines.
Hipertekst jest fragmentem narady koordynacyjnej w nadleśnictwie. Specjalistka ds. ochrony ppoż. informuje zebranych, że w bieżącym roku rozpoczęła funkcjonowanie leśna baza lotnicza. Będą w niej operować 2 samoloty typu Dromader oraz śmigłowiec MI‑2 z zestawem „Bambi”. Przedstawia możliwości maszyn, tj.: ilość zabieranej wody, prędkość przelotową, czas dolotu do pożaru.
